DOTC determined to complete M’lang airport ahead of GPH-MILF peace deal

By Edwin O. Fernandez/Fernandez/Philippine News Agency

COTABATO CITY, Feb. 19 (PNA) - - The Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) is determined to complete the Central Mindanao Rural Airport in North Cotabato, officials said today. “In fact, DOTC committed additional P20 million for the completion and expansion of M’lang Airport,” North Cotabato provincial board member Noel Baynosa said. Baynosa said the fund will be used for the processing of land conversion from agricultural to commercial airport and the acquisition of more lot area for the expansion. He said the first P10 million will be turned over to the provincial government while the remaining amount will be handed over by DOTC once the first tranche is fully liquidated. In spite of desperate attempts by local political interests to delay the completion of the most important infrastructure project ever to be implemented in North Cotabato, the controversy-hounded M’lang Rural Airport is bound to be completed during the administration of President Aquino.

M’lang Mayor Joselito F. Piñol said that an additional funding of P100 million has been allocated in the 2014 budget of the DOTC for the construction of the access roads from the national highway to the airport site in Barangay Tawan-tawan, Mlang. The new budget earmarked for the M’lang Airport Project came after the Regional Development Council (RDC) funding to completer the project as scheduled by the end of 2014.

Former North Cotabato Gov. Emmanuel Piñol, who is originally behind the project, said the fast-tracking of the Mlang Airport Project is being undertaken in view of the expected signing of the peace agreement between the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Philippine Government is 2015 which will usher in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Government.

“The M’lang Airport will be a very vital facility for the national government because it will be the alternate to the Cotabato City Airport,” a member of the Regional Development Council (RDC-12) said.

When completed, the M’lang Airport, officially named Central Mindanao Airport, is expected to accommodate Airbus 300 type aircraft and medium-sized cargo planes. Expected to serve the communities located in the southern parts of Bukidnon Province, Maguindanao, Davao del Sur, Sultan Kudarat and the whole of North Cotabato, the project was first envisioned by then Gov. Piñol, then M’lang mayor as early as 1995. Initial survey showed that the funds would be used for the extension of the runway from 1.2-2.5 kilometers.

The additional runway constructions started during the third quarter of last year, the mayor said. DOTC engineers who visited the place said P150 million will still be needed for the construction of the control tower, fire station and perimeter fence. (PNA)
